Reflective Clothing vs Hi-Vis Clothing: What’s the Difference?

Reflective material and high-visibility colour are related, but they do different jobs. Understanding the distinction helps you ask better questions when sourcing workwear.

What reflective material does

Reflective material returns light towards its source. On workwear, it is commonly used as strips or other visible sections. Its usefulness depends on the lighting situation and the position of the wearer. A reflective garment is not a light source of its own. Check the exact product information rather than assuming that all reflective materials or garment layouts perform identically.

What high-visibility colour does

Bright fluorescent colours help a person stand out in daylight. Lime and orange are common in visibility-focused clothing, but a colour name alone does not establish a garment’s compliance with a workplace specification. The combination of colour and reflective detail should be considered alongside the working conditions and the requirements set by the site.

Why many garments combine both

A team may work through daylight, shade and low-light conditions during the same shift. Garments often combine high-visibility background colour with reflective detailing to address different visibility needs. When comparing options, look at the complete outfit. A jacket, bag or other outer layer can hide the garment beneath, changing what is visible during normal work.

Choose from a written brief

Ask the site team to identify the required clothing features before requesting a quote. Record the tasks, shift pattern and any product documentation needed for approval. A useful catalogue provides a starting point; the final selection still needs to be checked for the specific workplace. If the required detail is missing, request confirmation for the exact garment.
